Workforce STAR Awards Event
May 1st marked a special day for Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas. With the theme
“Progress Continues in Southeast Texas”, Board members, employers, partners, and workers
were recognized for their important role in collaboration and partnership that continually moves
our economic efforts towards progress.

In the 2011 Annual Report for Southeast Texas, Board Chair Pat Avery stated “This year we want to
focus on the successful efforts of our Board members, staff, contractors and partners who work in
one accord for the delivery of quality workforce services. While we face challenges and changes to
the workforce development system, our goal of helping to promote self-sufficiency and economic
growth for the region remains our passion.”

Workforce STAR Employers Honored
Employers, partners, and contractors recognized at the 2011 Workforce STAR Awards event
are entities whose commitment to collaboration with the workforce system supports the Board’s
goal of economic growth, skills development and improvement, and self-sufficiency.

2011 Employer of Excellence
UnitedSabine Orange

The Local Employer of Excellence Award honors one private sector employer whose efforts
and initiatives had a positive effect on other employers, workers, and the community.

STAR Awards Honor Outstanding Achievements

Rounding out the awards presentation were the 2011 Workforce STAR Participants, Child
Care Provider, Workforce Contractors, and Workforce Center Service to Community.

The 2011 Workforce STAR Participants are individuals selected from each Workforce Center office.
These individuals are recognized for achieving a significant improvement in his/her life due to their
association with the workforce system. Important aspects of this award category are securing
employment, completion of education and training, and maintaining self-sufficiency.

STAR Awards Honor Outstanding Achievements

The volunteers that make up the Workforce Development Board were recognized for their
dedication and willingness to devote their time and expertise to the communities of Southeast
Texas. For 2011, Sharon LeBlanc received the first “Newcomer Award” for her enthusiasm and
involvement with the Board. LeBlanc represents Orange County and is the executive director of the
Greater Orange Area Literacy Service (GOALS.)

As the Director of Human Resources for Conn’s, Connie Davis has shared her valuable insights and knowledge of employment and hiring best practices with our Workforce board since 2010.

 
     
 
The Texas unemployment rate has decreased for the eighth consecutive month, with Southeast Texas following the statewide trend of a slowly improving job market.
